WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior
Kenna Zier and freshman
Ivey Crain recorded a goal and an assist as William & Mary drew Monmouth, 2-2, on Sunday afternoon at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
The Tribe (6-5-4, 2-1-3 CAA) opened the scoring in the fourth minute as Zier found the back of the net in her third-straight game. Graduate student
Cricket Basa sent cross in from along the right endline that Crain tried to volley. Monmouth defender Gabby Allen was able to block the Tribe rookie's shot, but it fell to Zier who finished from six yards out over the top of Monmouth goalkeeper Cassandra Coster.
W&M doubled its lead less than three minutes into the second half. Zier sent in a cross from the left wing. It ended up on the foot of Crain whose low-lining shot found the left side of the net for her team-leading eighth goal of the season. Crain increased her CAA-leading goal (5) and point (13) totals in league games. She has also registered at last a point in all six conference matches this season.
The Tribe joined top-10 Penn State as the only teams to score multiple goals against one of the nation's top defenses. Monmouth (10-2-2, 3-1-2 CAA) started the week ranked No. 19 nationally in GAA (0.54) and 19th in shutout % (61.5).
The Hawks, which had allowed just six goals on the year entering Sunday, pulled one back in the 58th minute. Following a corner kick, A'Liah Moore headed home a Lauren Karabin cross from eight yards out to close the gap to 2-1.
The visitor found the equalizer with less than five minutes remaining on a scrum in front of the Tribe net. Senior goalkeeper
Zoe Doughty saved an initial shot from Monmouth's Julia Evernham just outside the six. The rebound spilled over and was eventually collected and finished by Ava Allen from the top of the six.
Each team finished with nine shots on the afternoon. The Tribe put seven of the chances on from frame compared to just four for Monmouth. The Hawks tallied four corner kicks, while W&M had two.
