WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - William & Mary hit .304 as a team and rattled off 51 kills as the three-headed monster of
Taylor Burrell,
Kaitlyn Ferguson, and
Eleanor Stothoff pushed the Tribe offense past Hampton in four sets Saturday afternoon.
Burrell led the way hitting .500 with 13 kills, while Ferguson (.423) and Stothoff (.276) each added 12 kills.
Amy Schwem and
Emma Minnick dished out 22 and 20 assists respectively.
The middle blockers were active defensively as
Ryann Love had six blocks to fellow freshman Olivia Espositio's four; and veteran
Anna Porter had a match-high 17 digs.
The Tribe got out to a quick start winning four of the opening five points of the match. Hampton benefited from an 8-0 run in the middle of the opening frame to get out to a 13-9 lead. The Pirates extended the lead to 21-14 before the Tribe caught fire with a 8-0 run to take the lead. William & Mary would take a 28-26 frame behind five kills from Ferguson. As a team the Tribe hit .273 with 15 kills in the first.
Once again it was the Tribe getting off to a hot start in the second frame, using a six-point run to go up 9-4 on Hampton. William & Mary would use the early set momentum to take a 25-19 set to go up 2-0 in the match. Stothoff hit .800 in the frame with a set-high four kills as the Tribe hit .458 in the frame.
Hampton answered in the third set hitting .481 on the way to a 25-16 set win. Porter added six more digs and a pair of assists while
Sydney Taylor and Burrell each had a trio of kills for the Green and Gold.
The Tribe took control early, breaking out to a 11-5 early in the fourth. Taylor's sixth kill of the afternoon would give the home team a 10 point advantage at 19-9 and an ace by Love gave the Tribe a 25-14 win in the fourth to earn a 3-1 win. Burrell had four kills in the final frame on five chances.
The same two teams will meet at 2:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon in Kaplan Arena to finish off the weekend series. A Tribe win would ensure a winning record at home for the 2022 season.
