WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William & Mary women's soccer scored twice in the opening half and extended its unbeaten streak to six matches with a 2-2 draw against Charleston on Sunday afternoon at Martin family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
Â
Junior
Kenna Zier and freshman
Madison Moon both scored for the Tribe in the first half, but the visiting Cougars (8-4-1, 2-1-1 CAA) answered with two goals in the second 45 minutes to forge the tie.
Â
W&M (6-4-3, 2-0-2) controlled the opening 45 minutes and wasted little time taking the lead thanks to Zier's first career goal. Freshman
Ivey Crain played the ball into the left side of the penalty area to a wide-open Zier. The junior midfielder finished with a shot to the far post from 12 yards to give the Tribe the 1-0 lead just less than four minutes into the contest.
Â
The Tribe doubled its lead in the 21st minute on Moon's second goal of the season. Off a Tribe throw-in, junior
Elaina Longjohn unleashed a shot from the top of the box. Charleston goalkeeper Savannah Barron was able to blocked the attempt, but Moon jumped on the rebound and finished to the center of the net from eight yards out. It was Longjohn's fourth assist in the last four games and her fifth contest with a point in the last six.
Â
Less than two minutes into the second half, the Cougars pulled one back. Bubbles Dever carried the ball through the midfield and along the top of the box, before lofting a shot into the upper left side of the goal to draw the visitor within 2-1.
Â
The Cougars pulled even in the 78th minute thanks to a goal from Grace Powell. On the play, Oliva Freitas initial shot of the sequence from the top of the box hit off the left post. She collected the rebound and played it out to the wing where Mary Alexander served the ball back into the area. Powell ran onto the pass, collected and floated a shot into the upper left corner of the goal to tie it at two.
Â
W&M outshot Charleston, 12-10, including a 5-3 advantage in chances on goal. The Green and Gold also had four corner kicks compared to one for the visitor.
