ELON, N.C. – William & Mary women's soccer suffered a narrow 1-0 setback on the road at Elon on Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless opening half, the Phoenix (9-5-2, 5-3 CAA) scored the game's only goal in the 61st minute. Lydia Totten collected a deflected clearance and lifted a pass over the top of the Tribe defense. The quick change set up Jessica Carrieri with a 1v1 chance and she slotted it into the left side of the net to give the home team the lead.
The Tribe (6-7-4, 2-3-3 CAA) turned up the pressure after conceding the goal. In total, W&M outshot the home team 10-2 after the intermission, including 9-0 margin after Elon took the lead.
Senior
Kayleigh Shackford had a volley chance inside the penalty area off a nice pass from freshman
Ivey Crain just a minute after the Phoenix goal. Elon goalkeeper McKenna Dalfonso came off her line to block the lofted volley.
Just two later, junior
Kenna Zier had a chance from six yards out after Crain cut through the right side of the penalty area. The junior midfielder's shot went high of the frame.
Crain created a chance on her own in the 75th minute, dribbled through the top of the penalty area, before hitting a shot just wide of the right post.
The Tribe's final opportunities came off a corner in the final minute. Unfortunately, Emma D'Alessandro's initial shot was blocked and sophomore
Marisa McClure sent a chance wide of the goal from inside the area.
The teams played a scoreless opening 45 minutes. Elon outshot the Tribe, 10-2, in the first half. Making her second start of the season, sophomore
Morgan Wood tallied four saves, all in the first half.
For the game, both teams attempted 12 shots with the Phoenix putting five on frame compared to four for W&M. The Phoenix had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
