CAA-Leading Drexel Outlasts the Tribe in Double OT

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - For the fourth time in the last five years, William & Mary women's basketball battled into overtime with perennial Colonial Athletic Association power Drexel.

In a back-and-forth, entertaining 50 minutes on Sunday afternoon at Kaplan Arena, Keishana Washington scored 13 of her career-high 40 in the second overtime to outduel the Tribe's guard combo of Riley Casey and Sydney Wagner as the reigning league champion Dragons (16-2, 8-0 CAA) outlasted W&M, 75-67, in double overtime.

Casey (24) and Wagner (20) combined for 44 points to lead the way for the Tribe (6-12, 1-6 CAA) with each making big plays down the stretch to extend the game.

Drexel led by as many as 10 points, 35-25, following a Hannah Nihill leaner midway through the third period. The Tribe would not go quietly, using a 6-0 run, highlighted by a Kate Sramac 3-pointer, in a third quarter to close the gap.

A 7-0 run early in the fourth quarter gave the Green and Gold a 45-44 lead with six minutes remaining on a Wagner free-throw line jumper.

Neither team led by more than two over the final 6:45 of regulation or during the first overtime period, trading blows throughout. A jumper by Mariah Washington, a Nihill 3-pointer and two free throws from Tessa Brugler, who scored only two points before fouling out after averaging 14 per contest, put the visitors in front at different times in the fourth quarter.

W&M flipped the lead with a Bre Bellamy jumper and tied the game on two occasions thanks to Wagner, in regulation. The final time came at 51-51 thanks to a pair of free throws off an offensive rebound with 30 seconds remaining.

The teams continued to go back and forth in the overtime session. With the game tied at 55 out of a Drexel timeout with 20.7 seconds left, the Dragons went to Washington, who was fouled on a jumper from the left side. She hit both to put the visitors on top, 57-55.

After Dani McTeer went 1-of-2 at the charity stripe, W&M was forced to foul in the backcourt. This time, Washington went 1-of-2 at the free-throw line to make it a two-point game with 8.9 seconds left. Out of a Tribe timeout, Casey patiently weaved her way to the hoop, sending the game to a second OT period on a lay-up with under a second remaining.

In the second extra session, it was all Washington for the Dragons. She scored the period's first four points and tallied Drexel's first 10. After a Casey 3-pointer closed the gap to 62-61 with 2:55 left in the second OT, Washington converted on an old-fashion 3-point play and knocked down a triple over a 34-second stretch to put the game out of reach.

Drexel finished the game shooting 42.1% (24-of-57) from the floor, including 60% in the overtime periods. On the other side, W&M shot 37.1% (23-of-62) from the floor. Both teams used the free-throw line to their advantage with Drexel hitting 18-of-23 (78.3%), while the Tribe connected on 16-of-24 (66.7%). The Dragons held a 44-32 advantage on the glass, including a 17-15 cushion on the offensive glass. As a result, Drexel had a 15-7 advantage in second-chance points.

UP NEXT: The Tribe is back home on Friday, Feb. 4, when it welcomes Towson to Kaplan Arena for a 7 p.m. tip.
