Women's Soccer Comeback Falls Short at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y.  – Sophomore Elaina Longjohn scored her first collegiate goal but William & Mary women's soccer's second-half comeback fell short at Army, 2-1, on Friday evening.

The Tribe oushot Army, 9-3, on the evening and 5-2 on goal but in the end, West Point cashed in its only two opportunites.

Trailing 2-0, senior Caroline Monahan split a pair of West Point defenders into the left side of the 18-yard box and sent a beautiful pass to the top of the box, finding a wide-open Longjohn. The sophomore striker touched the ball forward and buried a low shot inside the left post for her first career tally in the 81st minute. It also marked Monahan's first career assist.

The Tribe had a trio of quality looks in the final five minutes but couldn't find the equalizer. Monahan just missed finding the back of the net herself in the 85th minute sending a shot wide of the frame.  Three minutes later, freshman Mia Suchora had a shot from 20 yards out that just went wide of the post, and Army goalkeeper Tyalor Stalheim denied Monahan's last chance in the 89th minute on a volley from 12 yards out.

Despite outshooting Army, 4-2, in the opening 45 minutes, W&M trailed at the half, 1-0. Off a turnover, Lauren Drysdale set Jasmine Talley free on the breakaway, and the West Point striker scored inside the near post to give Army the 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.

Army doubled its lead in the 62nd minute. Talley found space on the left flank with a nice move and crossed it into Dara Murray, who one-touched a redirect inside the right post from 10 yards out.

Quotable
"I thought it was another good battle.  We weren't as sharp with the ball as we needed to be, and they capitalized on two good opportunities.  We pieced together some good chances and had a lot of momentum the last 20 minutes but unfortunately ran out of time. On our goal, Caroline Monahan had a great assist, and Elaina (Longjohn) showed a lot of composure on the finish. Hannah Potter, Ginny Delacruz and Elaina all had great efforts tonight. We look forward to getting back home next weekend." – Head Coach Julie Shackford
