Women's Tennis Enjoys Strong Day One at the Liberty Invite

LYNCHBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis enjoyed a strong start to the fall campaign at the Liberty Invitational on Saturday. As a team, the Tribe won 10 of 14 singles matches, including perfect 2-0 marks from senior Lisa Fukutoku, junior Alisia Manolescu and freshman Emma Fernald, and four of seven doubles match-ups, with senior Mila Saric and junior Raffaela Alhach going 2-0.
 
Fukutoku won a pair of three sets matches, while Manolescu won two in straight sets. Fernald followed suit with her first two collegiate wins. Fukutoku dropped Marshall's Jutte Van Hansewyck, 7-5, 4-6, 10-8, before rallying for a three-set win over ECU's Anne Lou Champion, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.
 
Manolescu picked up a narrow straight-sets win over Marshall's Liz Stefancic, 6-4, 7-6 (3), and followed by dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over ECU's Alisa Diercksen.
 
Fernald dominated in her first career singles match, dropping just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Marshall's Rieke Gillar. In the nightcap, she tallied a three-set, 6-0, 2-6, 10-6 win over ECU's Alisha Hussain.
 
Both Saric and Alhach played one time in singles action against Marshall on Saturday and notched a win. Saric, who is ranked No. 97 nationally, upended Marshall's Madi Ballow, 7-5, 6-3. Alhack downed  Marshall's Gabrielle Clairotte, 6-3, 6-2.
 
After dropping the morning match, freshman Hedda Gurholt notched her first collegiate win by downing  ECU's Martina Muzzolon, 6-3, 6-4. Junior Elisa Van Meeteren split her matches as well and notched a victory thanks to a 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 win over Marshall's Sophia Hurrion.
 
In doubles, Saric and Alhach dropped just five total games in going 2-0. The pair dispatched of Marshall's Emma Vanderheyden and Liz Stefancic, 6-2, in the morning before taking down ECU's Ines Dachir del Bouhali and Anne Lou Champion, 6-3.
 
In the afternoon against East Carolina, the freshman duo of Emma Fernald and Hedda Gurholt and the team of  junior Elisia Van Meeteren and sophomore Kensie Cricchio picked up their first wins of the year. Fernald and Gurholt topped ECU's Martina Muzzolon and Alisa Diercksen, 6-4, while Van Meeteren and Cricchio downed the combined team of ECU's Alisha Hussain and Marshall's Kara Joseph, 6-1.
 
The Tribe returns to action at 9 a.m. on Sunday, taking on the host Flames in the final day of the Liberty Invitational.
