William & Mary rising senior
Missy Cundiff (Leesburg, Va.) had herself an amazing week at the Wave I U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb., and will move on to compete for a spot on Team USA in the Wave II Trials, June 19-20. Cundiff was one of four W&M swimmers competing in the Wave I trials this past weekend, where the top two finishers in each event advanced to the Wave II trials.
Cundiff, who came into the meet seeded 46th overall in the 50m freestyle thanks to her 25.95 qualifying time, turned in the three fastest times of the week over the course of about 36 hours. First, on Sunday, June 6, she time-trialed a 25.54 lifetime-best that also shattered the W&M program record of 25.70, set by
Katie Radloff '10 back in 2009. On Monday morning, in the prelims of the 50m free, Cundiff then lowered that record even further to 25.49, and won not only her heat but the top seed across all heats of the prelims. In the finals, Cundiff PR'ed for the third time, touching the wall in 25.46 seconds, and won by almost a final tenth of a second. In fact, her slowest time of the week, that 25.54 time-trial, would have tied for second in the finals heat. Both Cundiff's prelims and finals swims came in under the Olympic Consideration Standard (akin to an NCAA provisional qualifying time). She now advances to the Wave II trials, which will be held for the 50m free on Saturday, June 19 (prelims and top-16 in the semifinals), and Sunday, June 20 (top eight in the finals).
Also competing this week in the Wave I trials were three men's alumni swimmers.
Jack Doherty '20 took 36th in the 100m fly on Sunday in 55.72 seconds, and finished 31st overall in the 50m free on Monday in 23.17 seconds. His classmate
Ian Thompson '20 time-trialed a 23.53 in the 50m free Sunday, before timing 23.78 in the prelims on Monday. In the 200m IM (also on Monday), doctoral student
Ben Skopic '19 was the second alternate for finals, finishing 18th overall in the morning in 2:09.41.
At the Wave II trials, Cundiff will be joined by
Colin Wright '20, who is qualified in both the 100m free (June 16-17) and the 50m free (June 19-20).
