Lax Falls at Elon in Season Finale

ELON, N.C. – The William & Mary lacrosse team fell at Elon in its season finale, 16-6, on Sunday afternoon.
 
Although Elon jumped out to a 3-0 lead, W&M (3-9, 0-4) responded with goals by Belle Martire and Lauren Russell to narrow the margin to just one midway through the first half.
 
However, Elon (9-2, 3-1) held the Tribe scoreless for a span of more than 32 minutes en route to building an 11-2 advantage.
 
While W&M rattled off three consecutive goals midway through the second half to cut Elon's lead to 11-5 with 12:22 remaining, the Phoenix outscored the Tribe, 5-1, down the stretch to earn the conference victory.
 
Tribe Standouts
Russel led W&M with a pair of goals, while Sabrina Schrader added two points (1g, 1a) and a game-high seven draw controls.
 
Sydney Sloan added a team-high five ground balls with three caused turnovers and two draw controls, while Caroline Hertzberg posted three ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control.

Inside the Numbers
W&M owned advantages in draw controls (13-10) and ground balls (20-15), while it committed one fewer turnover (16-17).
 
Elon outshot the Tribe by just one, 28-27, but put 25 attempts on frame and had four more saves (13-9).

The Opposition
Sara Bouwman led Elon with a game-high six points (5g, 1a), while Gillian Curran added five points (3g, 2a) and a team-best six draw controls. Mae McGlynn (2g, 3a), Cate Mackel (3g) and Claire Smesko (2g) also provided offensive production for the Phoenix.
 
Goalie Paulina DiFatta came off the bench to post 12 saves and allowed just four goals in the final 48:01.

Notes
With her two caused turnovers, Hertzberg set a freshman single-season school record for caused turnovers per game (1.7), breaking the previous mark of 1.44 set by Abby Junior in 2014 … Goalie Elsa Rall totaled three saves and finishes her career with 473 stops, which ranks fourth in school history.
