HARRISONBURG, VA. – Ben Williamson and
Matt McDermott both homered for the Tribe and Carson Bell hit for the cycle for JMU in a wild 10-9 James Madison win in 11 innings Sunday afternoon. The game saw a pair of ties and six lead changes as the Tribe rallied down 7-5 to tie the game in the ninth. Both teams scored in each of their extra innings at bats.
Tribe starter
Zach Tsakounis allowed three runs over six innings and was credited with a no decision. Williamson, McDermott,
Matt Thomas, and
Tyler Solomon all had multi-hit games for the Green and Gold.
Williamson got the scoring going early leading off the top of the first with a double into right center. Thomas would walk before Solomon shot a single into left to plate Williamson. Matt Trehub reached on a fielder's choice and
Cole Ragone followed with an infield hit scoring Thomas.
After a one, two, three first inning, Tsakounis faced adversity in the second. Back to back hits to begin the frame placed JMU runners on second and third with no outs. The Tribe lefty dialed in and forced a pop up and a grounder to third in which Williamson cut off the runner at the plate. With men on first and third and two outs, Tsakounis induced another grounder to keep JMU off the board.
William & Mary added to the lead in the top of the fourth.
David Hogarth led off with a single and
Mark Trotta followed, being hit by a pitch.
Phil Conti laid down a sac bunt moving the runners up ninety feet and Williamson plated Hogarth with an RBI groundout.
It would be the sixth when JMU finally broke through against Tsakounis as the home team got a pair of runs back. Kyle Novak singled and Brady Harju reached on an error. Both would score on a double off the bat of Carson Bell to make it a 3-2 game.
The Tribe answered immediately as McDermott got both runs back in the top half of seventh. After a lead-off walk from Williamson, McDermott yanked a 1-2 pitch just inside the left field foul pole making it once again a three-run game.
Nick Zona got the Dukes back in the game, homering to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Chase DeLauter followed with a double and would later score on Conor Hartigan's ground out. Greenspon would retire the next two batters to keep it a 5-4 WM lead.
The Tribe would not have the lead for long as Michael Morgan doubled and scored on Carson Bell's two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth. The Dukes took a 7-5 lead as Hartigan slapped an RBI single later in the inning.
The Tribe bats came alive immediately in the ninth. Williamson launched a solo shot bringing the Green and Gold within one to lead off the frame. McDermott would rip a double down the left field line and score to tie the game on Thomas' single into left center.
Bell delivered a one-out triple in the bottom of the ninth but Cone would utilize a strikeout and a groundout to force extra innings. Trehub began the tenth on second base and moved to third on a sac bunt from
Max Winters. Trehub scored as Hogarth sent a sac fly to deep center.
Hartigan's one-out single would plate a run to tie the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the 10th. Cone would induce a double-play ball to end the threat and push the game to the 11th.
The Tribe would once again take the lead in the top of the 11th as Thomas smoked a two-out double off the wall in right that scored
Ryan McKenna. Three straight singles and a sacrifice fly from JMU would plate two runs giving the Dukes the 10-9 win.
