Lax Falls to No. 25 Elon in CAA Opener

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team opened its conference slate with a 15-6 setback to No. 25 Elon at Busch Turf on Saturday afternoon.
 
Although W&M (3-5, 0-1) was outscored by just one goal in the second half (6-5), it was unable to overcome a 9-1 halftime deficit.  
 
Elon (7-0, 2-0) opened the game with a 7-0 run en route to building the eight-goal lead at the break. W&M narrowed the margin to seven, 11-4, following back-to-back free position goals by Kathleen Cozzi and Sabrina Schrader midway through the second half but was unable to get any closer the rest of the way.
 
Tribe Standouts
Cozzi and Grace Ahonen led the Tribe offensively with two goals apiece, while Sabrina Schrader and Sydney Sloan also found the back of the cage. Schrader also totaled a career-high eight draw controls to go with three ground balls and a caused turnover.
 
Defensively, Caroline Donovan recorded a team-high three caused turnovers, while goalie Devon Fleischmann posted 10 saves and seven ground balls.


Inside the Numbers
W&M dominated the ground balls (22-13) and turned the ball over three fewer times (15-18).
 
Elon owned a narrow 12-11 margin in draw controls and posted three more saves (13-10).
 
Although the Phoenix attempted just one more shot than W&M (29-28), it connected on 51.7 percent of its shots.

The Opposition
Mae McGlynn led Elon with eight points (5g, 3a), while Sara Bouwman posted five goals.
 
Gillian Curran added four points (3g, 1a), while Cate Mackel found the back of the cage twice.

Notes
Elon now owns a 4-1 advantage in the all-time series … The teams will play again at Elon on May 2.

Up Next
W&M will return to action when it plays at No. 15 Towson next Saturday at 6 p.m. The contest will not count as a conference game due to the league's modified schedule this season.
