WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – For the first time since 2015, William & Mary hosts the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championship this weekend, April 22-25, at the Millie West Tennis Facility. The Tribe has own the CAA Championship through the year, winning 26 of the 35 all-time league titles.
The Tribe is the No. 3 seed in the event and opens play against No. 6 UNCW in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 24. Competition starts with the opening round on Thursday followed by the quarterfinals on Friday. The semifinals are set for Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m., with the championship to follow on Sunday at 1 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center will be used as a back-up site.
The 2021 CAA Tennis Championship will be closed to the general public. No spectators will be admitted on Thursday or Friday of the event. The semifinals on Saturday and championship on Sunday will be limited to team and player pass lists to keep the Millie West Tennis Facility within the limits of COVID-19 capacity. If matches are moved indoors due to inclement weather, the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center will be closed to all spectators.
Tribe News and Notes
- While W&M sits at 5-8 on the year, the Tribe is playing its best tennis entering the postseason. The Green and Gold won its final two regular season matches over Richmond, 5-2, and perennial Atlantic-10 powerhouse VCU, 4-1.
- The Tribe will host the CAA Championship for the 11th time. W&M previously hosted the event in 1985, 1987, 1989, 1992, 1995, 1996, 2004, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
- W&M is the No. 3 seed in the CAA Tournament for the third time. The Green and Gold was the No. 3 seed in 2009 and 2014.
- The Tribe faces UNCW, which won the 2014 CAA Championship when it was played at W&M, in the league tourney for the eighth time. W&M is 11-0 all-time against the Seahawks, including a 4-2 win in the CAA Championship match in 2017. In the most recent CAA Tournament played in 2019, the Tribe handed the Seahawks a 4-0 setback in the quarterfinals.
- Junior
Mila Saric enters the CAA Championship having won five in a row at the top singles spot. She is 8-2 overall at No. 1, including a pair of nationally-ranked wins. Twice this season, Saric upset ODU's Holly Hutchinson in come-from-behind fashion in three sets. Hutchinson was ranked No. 40 nationally in February and No. 88 in the most recent meeting in April. Over her career, Saric owns four nationally-ranked wins. Twice this season, Saric was named the CAA Singles Player of the Week on March 3 and April 14.
- Senior
Vitoria Okuyama is second on the team entering the CAA Championship with six singles wins. Each of her last two wins clinched Tribe victories over Richmond and VCU. She rallied for a three-set win at No. 4 over UR's Polina Shitikova before topping Alessia Ciuca in straight-sets at No. 3 vs. VCU.
- The Tribe is 5-0 this season when it wins the doubles point, including its last two victories over Richmond and VCU. Recently, Saric and sophomore
Alisia Manolescu went 2-0 in doubles, clinching the initial point of the match with an upset win over the No. 76-ranked doubles team in the country from VCU.
- As a team, W&M is 8-3 at the No. 1 doubles position. Okuyama and graduate student
Jill van den Dungen have teamed at the top spot over the last two matches, going 2-0. Okuyama and Saric, who were named the CAA Doubles Team of the Week on March 10, are 6-1 together at the top spot as well this season.
Dominating the CAA
W&M has a long history of dominating CAA competition, and more importantly the CAA Championship. The Tribe has won 26 of the CAA's 35 all-time women's tennis championships and finished as the runner up on six other occasions.
Since the league adopted its current, head-to-head team format for the CAA Championship in 1995, the Green and Gold is 61-8 (.884) at the event. Overall since the first season of CAA tennis, the Tribe is 144-21 (.873) all-time versus league opponents. In matches with current CAA teams, the Tribe is 88-7 (.926) all-time and 67-6 (.918) with those teams as members of the league.
