Vitoria Okuyama Rally Clinches Women's Tennis's 45th-Straight Win over Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis continued its dominance over Richmond on Sunday afternoon, winning for the 45th-straight time, 5-2.
 
Senior Vitoria Okuyama put the finishing touches on the Tribe's victory with a come-from-behind three-set win at No. 4. Along with Okuyama's win, the Tribe (4-8) claimed the doubles point and received singles victories from sophomores Raffaela Alhach and Alisia Manolescu as well as junior Mila Saric.
 
How It Happened
- The Tribe captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 thanks to a two new pairings. Saric and Manolescu did not drop a game in rolling past Marta Buendia and Adrienne Haynes, 6-0, on line three. After a Richmond (4-4) win at No. 2, the Tribe's top pair of graduate student Jill van den Dungen and Okuyama upended Emily Dunbar and Dessi Zlateva, 6-1.
- Alhach continued her strong weekend with a convincing win at No. 5 to increase the Tribe lead to 2-0. She dropped just three total games in a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sara Salemyr. Alhach won her second straight and improved to 3-0 on line five.
- After a Spider win at No. 2, Manolescu picked up a straight-sets win at No. 6 to extend the Tribe lead back to 3-1. The Tribe sophomore downed Carly Cohen, 7-6 (2), 6-3, for her fifth win of the year.
- The balance of the match came down to a trio of three sets tilts at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4.
- Okuyama clinched the Tribe triumph, rallying for a three-set win at No. 4. After dropping the first set to Polina Shitikova, 6-3, the Tribe senior responded with a 6-4 win in the second. She cemented the comeback with a 6-2 win in the clinching third. She won her fifth match of the spring and improved to 3-2 at No. 4.
- Saric wrapped up the Tribe victory with her fifth-straight win at No. 1. She won the opening set, 6-1, before Richmond's Emily Dunbar picked up a tiebreaker win in the second to force a third. In the final set, Saric topped Dunbar, 6-4, to improve to 8-2 at the top spot.
 
Up Next
The Tribe wraps up the regular season when it hosts VCU on Wednesday, April 14, at the Millie West Tennis Facility, weather permitting. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. start time.
