WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's soccer peppered the opposing goal in the final 45 minutes but could not overcome a pair of first half Elon goals in a 2-0 setback on Saturday afternoon.
The Phoenix (4-3, 3-1 CAA) jumped on top with a goal just 13 minutes into the game. Carson Jones switched field to Molly Mahoney, who quickly found Sarah Bevington inside the top right side of the box. Bevington finished over the top of W&M goalkeeper
Grace Lemley into the center netting from 15 yards out to give the visitor a 1-0 lead.
Elon doubled the lead just eight minutes later. Beky Myers scored from 35 yards out into the upper 90. Abby Fusca found Myers in the attacking half. Myers took a couple of settling touches and unleashed a rocket to push the margin to 2-0.
In the second half, W&M outshot Elon, 11-2, putting three chances on frame, but could not pull one back. The Tribe had a trio of quality chances in the first seven minutes of the second half. Sophomore
Kayleigh Shackford's shot from the top of the box went just wide of the left post just a minute into the second frame.
Elon goalkeeper McKenna Dalfonso made a massive stop in the 52nd minute to keep W&M off the board. Senior
Alex Kuhnle played the ball across the box to a rushing
Caroline Monahan, but Dalfonso come off her line and blocked Monahan's one-timer from in close.
Monahan rang a free kick off the crossbar in the 80th minute after
Hannah Potter was taken down just outside the left side of the penalty area to set up the opportunity.
Freshman goalkeeper
