ELON, N.C. – Sophomore
Alexander Levengood scored his third goal of the season, but William & Mary men's soccer suffered a 2-1 overtime loss at Elon on Saturday evening.
After Levengood nearly got the Tribe (2-4, 1-3 CAA) on the board with a header in the 21st minute, if not for a full extension save by Elon goalkeeper Cam Pelle, the Tribe sophomore finally found the back of the net just 10 minutes later.
As Elon (3-6, 2-2 CAA) pushed forward, sophomore
Nathan Messer sent a long clearance into the attacking half. Freshman
Joe Core jumped on a headed clearance attempt from Elon and played across the field to Levengood. The Richmond, Va., native touched near the top of the 18 and then buried a shot into the upper right corner of the goal to give W&M a 1-0 lead.
The Phoenix turned up the pressure in the second half and equalized in the 55th minute. Mattias Cooper bent in a corner from the left side to tie the match at one.
Elon had chances in the 60th and 66th minute but could not find a second. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Will Stack made a nice save on a Cooper breakaway in the 60th minute, coming off his line and blocking the chip attempt. Jeppe Jordoson hit the crossbar with a left footed shot from the left side of the area six minutes later.
Levengood and freshman
Michael Meese had a nice give-and-go to set up a scoring chance as W&M countered in the 67th minute. Meese played Levengood in to the right side of the penalty box, but Pelle came off his line to block the shot from eight yards out.
Both teams had a couple of strong opportunites in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Stack denied a Mason Duval breakaway chance with a kick save in the 84th minute.
On the other end, Levengood got a foot to a cross from the right flank inside the area, but Elon goalkeeper Cam Pelle was able to block it away.
Cooper sent a header off the crossbar in the 88th minute for the Phoenix, before sophomore
Diba Nwegbo sent a blast from 25 yards out straight on that Pelle was just able to get a paw to and knock it out with just over a minute left in regulation.
The game was delayed for more than 40 minutes just seconds into overtime. Elon scored the game-winner off a corner kick with just over a minute left in the first extra session. Stack pushed the initial attempt from Jannik Vidbaek off the crossbar, but Jalen Weatherspoon jumped on the rebound and score to give the Phoenix the win.
