Second-Half UNCW Goal Spoils Senior Day Celebration

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's soccer celebrated its nine-member senior class in its first home match of the spring season on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, despite a 15-6 Tribe shot advantage, UNCW played the role of spoiler, using an early second-half goal to down the Green and Gold, 1-0.

The Tribe (0-2-2, 0-1-1 CAA) controlled possession in the opening 45 minutes and was the more dangerous side, outshooting the Seahawks, 7-3. In the 28th minute, UNCW's Blair Barefoot made one of her three first half saves. Senior Renee Kohler collected a turnover at the top of the box and sent a shot to the lower left corner of the goal, but Barefoot was able to push it wide.

Four minutes later, the woodwork was unkind to the Tribe. Senior Alex Kuhnle sent a shot from distance on the left side of the pitch that beat Barefoot but rang off the cross bar and bounded back into play.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, the Seahawks (5-2, 3-0 CAA) broke through on the counter. Madison Henry played a nice diagonal ball from the left flank toward the attacking third and hit Jordan Faveri in stride. The UNCW striker touched into the top right side of the penalty area and despite a deflection off a Tribe defender's foot, her shot found the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Tribe continued to mount the pressure, but could not find the equalizer. Senior Colleen Norton cut back along the top of the 18 but her shot from the top of the 18 went just wide of the left post in the 60th minute. Nine minutes later, junior Caroline Monahan gained space down the left side, cut back toward the middle of the pitch, but her shot from 20 yards out hit the side netting.

In the 76th minute, sophomore Kayleigh Shackford beat the UNCW goalkeeper with a shot inside the area, but a Seahawk defender was back to block the chance away. Two minutes later, Kuhnle's shot from just outside the box floated just high of the crossbar.

The Tribe's final chance came off a foul just outside the 18-yard box with just four minutes remaining. The Green and Gold played the chance sideways to Monahan but her shot from dead center at the top of the box went wide of the left post.

Prior to kickoff, the Tribe honored its nine-member senior class - Meredith Beam, Erin Dailey, Kelsey Hamer, Mariana Hershner, Page Frantz, Lauren Kelly, Alex Kuhnle, Courtney Miles and Colleen Norton – for their contributions to the W&M program.
