WILLIAMSBURG, VA.- For the second straight evening William & Mary was able to ride a full team performance with standout efforts from two seniors to a 3-1 victory over Elon. The Tribe saw 18 kills from both
Julia Brown and
Kate Dedrick as the team moved to 2-0 after completing a sweep of Elon Saturday night in Kaplan Arena.
The match was reminiscent of Friday's triumph as the Green and Gold jumped on the Phoenix in the first set hitting .270 in the set and holding the Elon attack to just seven kills in the opening frame.
Kate Van Houten kickstarted another outstanding performance with 14 first set assists in the 25-22 win.
The Phoenix went point for point with the Tribe in the second frame despite allowing W&M to have a game-high 19 kills in the set. In a game that featured excellent offense the Tribe hit .326 nearly matched by Elon's .314 but the home team would squeak out a 26-24 win pushing the lead to 2-0.
Elon showed resilience jumping on the Tribe in the third set providing fans with deja vu from Friday night's victory. William & Mary could not keep up the outstanding offensive production and hit just .086 with seven errors while the Phoenix played a nearly perfect set committing only two errors at the net cruising to a 25-14 win to extend the match.
But coach
Tim Doyle's Tribe came out with energy taking the first four points of the fourth frame, setting the tone for the final stanza.
Madeleine Bertz came up with a big block and outside hitters
Lauren Merrill and
Maddie Meyers took over offensively leading the Tribe to a 27-25 match-deciding win.
Dedrick's 18 kills come on the heels of a 25-kill effort Friday night. The senior added 13 digs for her first double-double of the season. It was
Julia Brown's second straight evening with 18 kills as the middle blocker hit a strong .316 at the net. Merrill contributed 12 kills of her own to go with an ace and a quartet of digs.
Freshman
Maddie Meyers did not record a kill in the first frame but came alive offensively to finish with a new career-high nine point-enders to go with seven digs. When the dust settled sophomore setter
Kate Van Houten had another 52 assists nearly matching her 55 mark from Friday evening.
While the Tribe only made a pair of blocks in the match, the defense was still able to limit Elon's offense thanks to outstanding play in the back row.
Anna Porter led the way with 18 digs and fellow sophomore
Gabi Ganley chipped in nine in the victory.
The Tribe will look to ride the momentum of this weekend's sweep into next weekend's pair of matches in Charleston. William & Mary will visit the Cougars for a couple matches next Saturday and Sunday.
