Men's Tennis Suffers Setback at Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – The William & Mary men's tennis team opened by claiming the doubles point but suffered a 5-2 setback at Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
 
The Tribe (1-1) won the first two doubles tilts off the court at No. 2 and No. 3 to take a 1-0 lead. Despite a singles wins from Sebastian Quiros at the No. 3 spot, ODU (2-5) pulled out the team triumph with singles wins at the remaining five spots.
 
How it Happened
- The Tribe captured the doubles point for the second-straight matches and 10th time in the last 13 dating back to last season.
- Playing together for the first time in match play, graduate student Lez Kazakov and junior Joseph Brailovsky rolled to a 6-2 win over Younes Lalami and Francois Le Tallec at the No. 2 spot.
- Senior Finbar Talcott and junior Daniel Pellerito clinched the point with a win at No. 3. The Tribe tandem upended ODU's Tomislav Podvinski and Nicola Vidal, 6-4. Talcott and Pellerito evened their season mark at 1-1 and are 7-3 on line three over the last two seasons.
- Senior Sebastian Quiros picked up his first win of the season on line three, topping Nicola Vidal in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6. It was Quiros 47th career singles wins.
- Unfortunately, the Monarchs posted singles wins at the other five singles posts to claim the team victory. ODU picked up straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 to take a 3-2 lead. After Quiros win at No. 3, Old Dominion clinched the team victory with a narrow straight-sets win at No. 4.
- At No. 2, graduate student Brenden Volk and ODU's Tomislav Podvinski went to three sets. The Monarch play posted a 6-3 win in the first, before Volk answered with a tiebreaker win in the second. With the team result decided, Podvinski outlasted Volk, 10-7, in a third-set super tiebreaker.
 
Up Next
The Tribe travels to Liberty on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. It will be the first match for the Flames at the recently completely Liberty Indoor Tennis Center.
