William & Mary Director of Athletics Brian D. Mann has announced the hiring of Jarrad Turner as the Tribe's senior associate athletics director for advancement, effective Jan. 10, 2022.
Turner, who is currently the associate director of development for Michigan State University Athletics, was selected after a comprehensive national search.
Mann cited Turner's passion for intercollegiate athletics and higher education, his proficiency in athletics fundraising and his experience as a student-athlete as key reasons he was selected. "Jarrad has an outstanding background that positions him for success here. He is eager to get in front of people in the William & Mary community and to start building relationships right away," Mann said.
Turner is a newcomer to Tribe Athletics, but has long held the university in high regard. "William & Mary has always been a school I circled. With its great academic reputation, strong and supportive leadership and impressive student-athletes, this is an opportunity that I am thrilled to embrace. There is so much potential to grow that I can't wait to get started and to meet the people who love and support William & Mary," Turner said.
As senior associate athletics director for advancement, Turner will develop and execute the strategy for philanthropy and engagement for the Tribe, including helping to bring the
$55 million All In campaign to a successful conclusion. To that end, Turner will help oversee efforts to reimagine the new home for W&M Athletics and to strengthen its financial foundation, with an emphasis on growing scholarships, ensuring equity and providing top-notch facilities for athletes to train, compete and study.
Turner will secure gifts at all levels from alumni, friends, corporations and foundations, and parents and will work directly with the Athletic Foundation and Tribe Club Board. He will also provide recommendations to the director of athletics on matters related to advancement activities and donor strategies.
"We are thrilled to welcome Jarrad to the Tribe. He will infuse new energy and momentum into our All In campaign at such a pivotal moment for athletics," said Sue Hanna Gerdelman '76, P '07, P '13, chair of All In. "I look forward to working closely with him as we advance our fundraising and engagement endeavors, which are critical to strengthening the entire educational experience at William & Mary."
The senior associate athletics director of advancement is a member of the director of athletics' senior leadership team. He will oversee an athletics development team that will assist in all facets of the daily operation of the William & Mary Athletic Foundation (WMAF).
As associate director at MSU, Turner was responsible for establishing plans to cultivate major gift prospects for gifts up to $5 million in the midwest and western region. He developed and executed strategic plans for increasing revenue, community awareness and engagement.
Prior to his time at MSU, Turner was a major gift officer at Niagara University. He also worked as associate athletics director of marketing and development at Campbell University and as athletic marketing coordinator at Mercer University.
Turner has significant additional experience in athletics and higher education, having been involved in NCAA championship events and leadership conferences. He participated in the Black Leaders in Philanthropy Mentor Program and he is a member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
Turner has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from The Pennsylvania State University, where he was on the varsity wrestling team. While wrestling for the Nittany Lions, Turner was a four-year letter winner and earned Freestyle All-America honors at University Nationals. He also has a Master of Arts in Sport Administration from Kent State University, where he served as a graduate assistant coach for the wrestling team.
Turner will be moving to Williamsburg, Virginia, with his wife Katy Tran Turner, a former Division I field hockey player, and two children, Henry (5) and Lily (2). The Turner Family has two dogs, Buster and Luna, who are looking forward to being William & Mary fans.
