For more than a century, William & Mary and Richmond have met on the gridiron in the most played rivalry in the south. The rivalry series began in 1898 and has been played 131 times with the two teams playing to an amazingly even 63-63-5 record. The two teams started competing for the Capital Cup during the 2009 season, which replaced the I-64 Trophy, and reflects the historical significance of the cities of Williamsburg and Richmond as the last two capitals of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
