Women's Tennis Dominates on Day One of the Elon Invitational

ELON, N.C. -  William & Mary women's tennis turned in a dominating near perfect performance on the opening day of the Elon Invitational.
 
As a team, the Green and Gold won all eight of its doubles matches and claimed victories in six of seven singles tilts, advancing five to the semifinals of their respective singles draws.
 
All four Tribe doubles combinations were new for the fall season and all four posted two wins on Friday. In the Maroon Draw, the Green and Gold tandem of junior Elisa Van Meeteren and freshman Ine Stange as well as the pairing of junior Alisia Manolescu and sophomore Kensie Cricchio won both their quarterfinals and semifinals matches.
 
In the Gold Draw, the pair of senior Mila Saric and freshman Emma Fernald and the duo of junior Raffaela Alhach and freshman Hedda Gurholt posted wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals as well.
 
Saric dropped just one game in a convincing win in the quarterfinals of the Gold Singles Draw. The No. 97-ranked player in the country ran her season mark to 8-2.
 
Both Alhach and Gurholt claimed quarterfinal wins in the Maroon Singles Draw. Alhach needed three sets to pick up her fifth win of the fall, while Gurholt dropped just two games in improving to 7-4 on the year.
 
Fernald and Stange won in straight sets to advance to the Powell Singles Draw semifinals. Fernald evened her singles ledger at 4-4, while Stange improved to 2-1.
 
Junior Lisa Fukutoku rounded out the Tribe singles wins, claiming her first match in the Acorn Singles Draw. She improved to 5-2 with a straight-sets win.
 
The final day of the Elon Invitational begins at noon on Saturday, Oct. 30. The day will include one round of doubles and the final two rounds of singles.
