NEWARK, DEL.- Big second half efforts from Chaniqwa Gilliam and Rebekah Frisby-Smith were not enough for the Tribe as William & Mary (4-4, 1-2 CAA) fell to Delaware, (6-1, 3-0 CAA) 79-55 Saturday afternoon in Newark. The 12 points from Gilliam and 10 from Frisby-Smith were both career highs.
After gaining an early four-point lead behind baskets from Gabby Rogers and Nyla Pollard, the Tribe surrendered a 12-2 first quarter run to the Blue Hens. W&M would stay within touch before a 12-0 Delaware run late in the second quarter gave the home team a firm control over the game.
Delaware would outscore the Tribe by two points in the third quarter and each team would tally 22 in the final frame.
Sydney Wagner joined Gilliam and Frisby-Smith in double-digits recording 11 points and Rogers led the way for the Tribe on the glass pulling down seven boards. Pollard added seven points and Bre Bellamy chopped in with five points and six rebounds.
It was a difficult day on the glass for the Tribe as the Green and Gold were bested by Delaware, 52-33 in the rebound department. Bailey Eichner, William & Mary's leading rebounder fouled out of the ballgame after picking up three boards.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
