RICHMOND, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team fell at Richmond, 22-9, on Saturday afternoon.
Although the score was knotted at 1-1 more than eight minutes into the contest, Richmond (4-0) utilized a 7-0 run to build a comfortable lead.
While W&M (1-3) narrowed the margin to five on a pair of occasions midway through the first half, UR closed the opening stanza with three unanswered goals to lead 13-5 at the intermission.
The Tribe rattled off a 4-1 run midway through the second half, but Richmond closed the game with six unanswered goals to secure the non-conference victory.
Tribe Standouts
Belle Martire led W&M in goals (4) and draw controls (4), while
Meredith Hughes added three points (1g, 2a) with three draw controls.
Audrey Hoeg totaled a team-high three ground balls to go with a caused turnover and a draw control.
Goalie
Elsa Rall posted 11 saves, marking the third time in the first four games that she has recorded a double-digit saves total.
Inside the Numbers
UR out-shot W&M, 41-20, and registered 33 attempts on goal.
The Spiders also owned advantages in draw controls (19-14) and ground balls (17-11), while they committed five fewer turnovers (13-18).
The Opposition
Arden Tierney led Richmond with seven points (6g, 1a) and a game-high 10 draw controls, while Sam Geiersbach totaled five points (2g, 3a).
Madison Ostrick and Kendall Duffy recorded three goals apiece.
Notes
Martire has led W&M in goals scored each of the first four games this season and currently has 16 … Despite the loss, W&M controls the all-time series against UR, 44-12-1, and owns a 74-25-1 record versus teams currently in the A-10.
