GREENVILLE, N.C.- William & Mary baseball dropped a 7-4 decision Sunday afternoon to No. 21 ECU. Junior Matt McDermott recorded his 100th career hit in the ballgame and sophomore Matt Thomas had two hits and a pair of RBI in the Tribe loss.
ECU jumped on the Tribe early with five first-inning singles leading to a trio of runs. W&M starter Jack Cone would get a double-play ball to limit the damage. The Pirates would strike again adding another run in the third.
Matt Thomas would triple with one out in the fourth inning. Tyler Solomon would single him home cutting the ECU lead to 4-1. In the fifth, Phil Conti would lead off with a single and be pushed to second by David Hogarth. Matt Thomas would knock a two-out single to bring in Conti cutting the Pirate's lead in half.
Freshman Ben Greenspon would relieve Cone in the fifth and toss a 1-2-3 inning in his collegiate debut. ECU sophomore Connor Norby would hit a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning, pushing the lead to 5-2. In the seventh, Matt McDermott singled for his 100th career base hit. The Tribe would load the bases, but ECU would shut the door to keep a three-run lead. The Pirate's tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 7-2.
Brandon Raquet and Ben Williamson would lead off the eighth with back to back singles. A Matt Trehub single would bring in Raquet, and Williamson would score when Matt Thomas forced a bases-loaded walk cutting the deficit to 7-4. However, the comeback would fall short as the Tribe fell to the Pirates in the series finale.
The Tribe will have an off day tomorrow before facing No. 15 Duke in Durham on Tuesday afternoon.
