FAIRFAX, Va. – Junior guard
Sydney Wagner scored a career-high 27 points to lead the William & Mary women's basketball team to a 48-43 victory at George Mason on Wednesday afternoon.
Wagner's outstanding effort came just three days after posting a then-career-best 23 points in the Tribe's win against Navy on Sunday. The Phoenixville, Pa., native connected on six 3-pointers, which ranks tied for the ninth-best single-game performance in school history.
While Wagner provided much of the Tribe's (2-2) offensive production, a tremendous collective effort defensively helped limit Mason (2-3) to just 43 points and 27.8 percent shooting, including 1-of-16 from beyond the arc.
After W&M opened the game with nine unanswered points and eventually led by as many as 18, the Patriots narrowed the margin to just one at 40-39 following a layin by Taylor Jameson with 2:20 remaining.
However, the Tribe responded on the ensuing possession when Wagner connected on a 3-pointer after a big offensive rebound by senior
Bailey Eichner, who finished the contest with a team-high 10 boards.
Mason briefly cut the gap to 45-42 with 0:32 to play, but sophomore
Chaniqwa Gilliam connected on a pair of clutch free throws to help preserve the victory. Gilliam finished with seven points.
