CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The William & Mary football team opened its road slate with a 52-17 setback at Virginia on Friday evening.
Although W&M (1-1, 0-0 CAA) was outscored by just three points in the second half, it was unable to overcome a 35-3 halftime deficit.
The Tribe's defense was successful generating turnovers for the second consecutive week, as it forced the Cavaliers (2-0, 1-0 ACC) into four miscues – highlighted by a 47-yard pick-six by linebacker
Arman Jones late in the third quarter.
Tribe Standouts
In addition to Jones' pick-six, safeties
Corey Parker and
Miles Hayes both recorded interceptions, while linebacker
Trey Watkins recovered a muffed punt to help set up a career-long 40-yard field goal by
Jake Johnston in the second quarter.
Watkins and cornerback
Latrelle Smith totaled a team-high 10 tackles with one TFL apiece, while Jones' and Parker's stat lines also included eight and seven stops, respectively.
Running back
Albert Funderburke led the Tribe offensively with 50 rushing yards on just five carries with a touchdown.
Quarterback
Kilton Anderson came off the bench and completed 4 of 8 passes for 103 yards, highlighted by a 39-yard strike to wideout
Brandon Battle.
Inside the Numbers
Virginia outgained the Tribe, 511-193, and owned a 216-63 advantage on the ground.
The Cavaliers were 9 of 14 on third downs, while the Tribe was just 1 of 11. Additionally, UVA did not punt.
Virginia scored touchdowns on its opening four drives to begin the game, while W&M found the end zone on two of its final three possessions to close the contest.
The Opposition
Quarterback Bryce Perkins led the Cavaliers by completing 16 of 26 passes for 192 yards with two touchdowns, while he also added 68 yards on the ground with a touchdown.
Running back Mike Hollins recorded two touchdown runs and finished the contest with 78 rushing yards on 11 carries.
Linebacker Zane Zandier posted a team-high nine tackles with 2.0 TFL, while cornerback Nick Grant scored on an 85-yard pick-six.
Wide receiver Joe Reed found the end zone on special teams with a 100-yard kickoff return.

W&M has forced eight turnovers through the first two games this season … Jones' pick-six marks the 12th season in the last 13 years that W&M has recorded at least one defensive or special teams touchdown … The pick-six was the second of Jones' career, as he posted a 90-yard interception for a score in the win against Maine last season … W&M is outscoring its opponents in the third quarter, 31-7.
