WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary men's soccer scored twice over an eight-minute second-half span on the way to its first victory of the season, shutting out two-time defending regular-season Patriot League Champion Loyola Maryland, 2-0, on Tuesday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
Senior
Julian Ngoh scored for the second time in three matches to provide the game-winner in the 58th minute, and freshman
Diba Nwegbo notched his first career tally in the 66th minute to provide all the scoring for the Tribe (1-4-2).
The best chance of the opening 45 minutes came when the Tribe hit the woodwork in the 19th minute. Along the right side of the box, Ngoh split a pair of defenders and centered a pass to senior
Reeves Trott. His chance from straight on, eight yards out hit off the right post and was corralled by Loyola Maryland (2-5) goalkeeper Chase Vosvick.
Just 13 minutes into the second half, freshman
Nathan Messer and Ngoh combined for the first goal of the match. Messer created the chance with a nice slide tackle along the left side of the box and then cut through the defense inside the penalty area. He sent a low pass to Ngoh at the penalty spot. The senior forward gathered, turned and hit a shot into the upper right side of the frame for the lid lifter.
W&M used a set-piece to cash in its second goal of the match. After freshman
Alexander Levengood was fouled along the right flank, sophomore
Derin Kokuuslu sent in the free kick, and Nwegbo caught a glancing header from the near side of the six-yard box, placing a the ball inside the far post to increase the Tribe lead to 2-0.
