Men's Soccer Rallies to Draw #24 NC State, 1-1

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –William & Mary men's soccer rallied from a goal deficit to draw Atlantic Coast Conference opponent and No. 24-ranked NC State, 1-1, on Tuesday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. The Tribe (0-2-1) equalized from senior Cole Smith just two minutes after conceding late in the second half to forge a tie.

Seniors Cole Smith and Julian Ngoh combined on the Tribe goal in the 83rd minute, just a 1:02 after the Wolfpack struck to take the lead. Ngoh beat the NC State defense to the end line in the left side of the 18-yard box. Sophomore Derin Kokuuslu made a hard run to the near post, freeing Smith on the backside of the six. Ngoh's cross made it to his fellow striker, and Smith finished into the right side to draw the Tribe even at one.

After a relatively even first half, NC State (2-1-1) turned it on in the the second half and broke through in the 81st minute. David Loera, a member of the preseason watch list for the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy, scored from 18 yards out and his shot from the right side caught a deflection and lofted over the top of freshman goalkeeper Kieran Baskett to put the Wolfpack in front, 1-0.

Despite allowing the goal, Baskett turned in a strong performance in his third collegiate start. The rookie goalkeeper made seven saves, including a couple of crucial point-blank stops. Baskett turned away an Iverson Brisma chance from 12 yards out in the 45th minute off a turnover and came up with a key stop with just over two minutes remaining in the first overtime, denying Tyler Gabarra on the doorstep.

Along with assisting on the equalizer in the second half, Ngoh narrowly missed giving the Tribe in the lead in the 57th minute. After a nice combination with sophomore James Bradley, the senior striker lifted a shot toward the upper right corner from 12 yards out. The chance beat NC State goalkeeper Vincent Durand, but he was saved by the woodwork as the shot hit the crossbar and went out of play for a goal kick.
