W&M Lax Edged by Elon, 12-9, on Senior Night

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team was edged by Elon, 12-9, on Senior Night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
 
Although W&M (6-9, 1-5) held Elon (5-11, 3-3) to just one goal during the final 20:31 and utilized a 5-1 run to narrow a seven-goal deficit to just three with 4:30 remaining, it was unable to complete its comeback bid.
 
Things looked good for the Tribe early as it raced out to a 3-1 advantage less than seven minutes into the contest. However, the Phoenix responded with a pivotal 10-1 run to build an 11-4 advantage with 20:32 remaining in the second half.
 
Tribe Standouts
Freshman Lauren Russell led the Tribe with three goals and two draw controls, while freshman Belle Martire and Meredith Hughes added two goals apiece. With the effort, Martire equaled the program's freshman single-season record for goals (45) established by Grace Golden (2008) and Pixie Hamilton (1977). Additionally, the total moves her into a tie for ninth on W&M's single-season goals list.
 
Sophomore Sophie Kopec also came up big with three points (1g, 2a), while freshman Starr Howard totaled three caused turnovers, three ground balls and two draw controls. Senior Olivia Harpel added three caused turnovers, two ground balls and a goal.
 
Senior Maddie Torgerson was excellent on the draw circle and posted a team-high five draw controls.
 
The Opposition
Kaley Thompson led Elon with five points (4g, 1a), while Mae Mcglynn (2g, 1a), Gillian Curran (2g, 1a) and Shannon Horan (2g, 1a) added three points apiece. Curran's stat line also include a game-high six draw controls.
 
Goalie Paulina Difatta tallied a game-high 12 saves with a .571 save percentage.  
 
Notes
Senior Hannah Ryan totaled a pair of caused turnovers and finishes her career with 54 CT, which ranks ninth on W&M's career list … Howard finished her rookie season with a single-season school-record 79 draw controls, which shattered the previous mark of 57 … Russell closed out the season with hat tricks in five of the last seven games.
