GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore
Sebastian Quiros picked up a top-100 win, knocking off the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, and the William & Mary men's tennis team jumped to the early lead by taking the doubles point in the league semifinals on Friday afternoon. In the end, No. 2-seeded Elon used its strength in singles, winning four times in individual play, to top the Tribe, 4-2, at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
How It Happened
- The Tribe (4-16) rallied to claim the doubles point and a 1-0 lead in the semifinal against Elon. It marked the sixth time in the last 12 matches that W&M claimed the doubles point.
- After the Phoenix (20-4) won at No. 2, sophomore
Finbar Talcott and freshman
Daniel Pellerito answered with a victory on line three. The Tribe duo topped Dino Bonetta and Taylor Foote, 7-5, for its second win of the year.
- At the top post, junior
Brenden Volk and sophomore
Chen Ruo clinched the initial point of the match for the fourth time this season. The Tribe duo topped Felipse Sarrasague and Mario Paccini, 7-5, for their fifth win at the top spot. Volk and Ruo evened their record at 7-7 on the year, while defeating a Phoenix team that entered the match at 9-1.
- Elon ripped off straight-sets singles wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 to take a 3-1 lead. Kyle Frankel won his 13th-straight match on line four, and Felipe Osses-Koning tallied his 12th victory in a row at the third singles spot. Paccini notched the last of the trio at No. 2.
- One day after being the hero in W&M's quarterfinal victory over Drexel, sophomore
Sebastian Quiros turned an impressive performance at No. 1 singles. Squaring off with the reigning CAA Player of the Year Felipse Sarrasague, Quiros took the opening set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4). He carried the momentum over into the second set, rolling to a 6-1 victory and an upset of the No. 96-ranked player in the country. Quiros improved to 20-15 overall on the year and 5-3 at the top spot. It was his second nationally-ranked win of the year.
- Elon senior Taylor Foote clinched the Phoenix's spot in the CAA title match with a win at No. 6. He topped Green and Gold rookie
Daniel Pellerito, 6-1, 6-4, for his 11th-straight win, compared to zero losses.
- At No. 5, Ruo dropped the opening set, 6-4, to Camilo Ponce, but was up a break, 4-2, in the second and potentially on the way to a third set. The match was abandoned with the team result decided.
