ELON, N.C. – The William & Mary women's tennis team wasted little time advancing to the Colonial Athletic Association Semifinals on Thursday morning, soaring past UNCW, 4-0, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The top-seeded Tribe extended its CAA win streak to 14 matches with the victory over the Seahawks. In search of its fifth-straight league title and 27th overall, the Green and Gold easily claimed the doubles point and then received straight-sets singles wins from juniors
Rosie Cheng and
Charlotte Madson as well as freshman
Mila Saric to roll to the quarterfinal triumph.
How it Happened
- The Tribe captured the doubles point for the 12th time this season and fourth time in the last five matches with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
- Saric and Cheng turned in a dominating performance on line two, blanking the Seahawk tandem of Sarah Horn and Celeste Matute, 6-0. The Tribe pair improved to 2-0 on the year.
- At No. 3, senior
Lauren Goodman and Madson clinched the initial point of the match with their fourth win in the last five matches. The W&M pairing topped Lea Dubois-Rebiere and Rachel Marthinsen, 6-3, to improve to 7-3 at the No. 3 spot.
- The Tribe raced out to a commanding lead in singles, winning the first set at all six spots. Madson won for the seventh time in her last nine matches, bouncing Rishika Ravindran, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5 to extend the Green and Gold lead to 2-0. She picked up her 13th win of the year and ran her ledger to 6-4 at No. 5.
- Saric and Cheng carried over their doubles performance to singles to cement the Tribe's advancement. Saric picked up W&M's second singles win of the day with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Dubois-Rebiere on line three. The Tribe rookie pushed her team-leading singles ledger to 17-11 and 13-6 in dual-match play. She won her second match in a row and improved to 4-2 at No. 3.
- Cheng, who was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the CAA Championship last season, ran her record at the league tournament to 6-0 over her career, dropping just four games in a win at the top spot. She topped Maddy Muller-Hughes, 6-2, 6-2, to clinch the Tribe's quarterfinal win. It was Cheng's ninth win on the year and fourth at the top spot.
