Brenden Volk, Chen Ruo Pull Off Top-20 Doubles Upset as Men's Tennis Celebrates Senior Day

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's tennis team honored its senior class of Tristan Bautil and Michael Ruamthong on Sunday afternoon the Millie West Tennis Facility. In its regular-season finale, the Tribe fell to Old Dominion, 6-1.

Highlighting the Green and Gold's effort was junior Brenden Volk and sophomore Chen Ruo. The Tribe tandem notched a top-20 nationally-ranked win at the top doubles post. It was the highest-ranked doubles win in dual-match play for a Green and Gold team since 2011 when Jamie Whiteford and Sebastien Vidal knocked off the No. 6 team in the country from Ohio State.

How It Happened

The duo topped the No. 18-ranked pair of Aziz Kijametovic and Francois Musitelli, 6-3, to give the Tribe the early lead in doubles. Volk and Ruo picked up their sixth win overall and fourth at No. 1.
- ODU (12-9) rallied with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the doubles point. Jannik Giesse and Oliver Tobisch topped sophomore Finbar Talcott and freshman Daniel Pellerito, 6-4, on line three to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
- The Monarchs recorded straight-sets wins in five of the six singles matches to secure the team triumph. Luca Maldoner posted the clinching triumph at the No. 4 spot.
- Volk won his second-straight match at the No. 3 position. He upended Jannik Giesse, 6-4, 7-6 (9), for his 12th victory of the season. Volk won for the fifth time in his last seven matches.
