WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's tennis team honored its three-member Senior Class of
Deepa Dhore,
Lauren Goodman and
Clara Tanielian on Saturday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The group has led W&M to three-staright Colonial Athletic Association titles and an NCAA Tournament bid in each of its three seasons.
In its Senior Day match, freshman
Mila Saric posted a convincing win at No. 3 singles, but in the end, No. 32-ranked Old Dominion pulled out a 4-1 victory.
How It Happened
- Old Dominion (16-3) captured the doubles point with a 6-4 win at the top spot. Trailing by a break at 5-3, the Tribe duo of Tanielian and sophomore
Vitoria Okuyama broke ODU's Holly Hutchinson and Brooke Pilkington to close the gap and get on serve. The 10th game came down to a no-ad deciding point, and the Monarch pair pulled out the win to clinch the initial point of the match.
- After ODU won at the No. 2 doubles spot, junior
Rosie Cheng and Saric pulled the Tribe even thanks to a 6-4 win on line three over Natalya Malenko and Nataliia Vlasova, who entered the match at 9-4 on the year. It marked the first time the Tribe duo teamed together, and Saric collected her team-leading 13th doubles win.
- Old Dominion won at the No. 1 and No. 6 singles positions to increase its lead to 3-0.
- Saric turned in a dominating performance at No. 3 to put the Tribe on the board. She bounced Oleksandra Andrieieva, 6-2, 6-2, for her team-leading 16th singles win of the year. The Tribe rookie won for the third time in her last four matches and improved to 12-6 in dual-match play, including a 3-2 at the No. 3 spot.
- The Monarchs clinched their 13th win in the last 15 matches as Pilkington notched a straight-sets win at the No. 5 post for the capper.
Up Next
- The Tribe returns to action when it takes part in the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association Championship, April 17-20. The event will be held at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C., for the fourth-straight year.
- W&M has won 26 CAA Championships, including crowns in each of the last four seasons.
- The Tribe will likely be the No. 1 seed in the CAA Tournament and open play in the quarterfinals on Thursday, April 18. The CAA Semifinals are set for Friday, April 19, with the championship match on Saturday, April 21.
- The seeding for the CAA Championship will be released from the conference office early next week.
