Strong First Half Propels W&M Lax Past Longwood, 13-5

FARMVILLE, Va. (March 9, 2019)—The William & Mary lacrosse team cruised to an impressive 13-5 victory at Longwood on Saturday afternoon.
 
W&M (3-3) owned a commanding 8-1 lead at halftime and extended the margin to as many as eight goals in the second half.
 
Although LU (2-4) narrowed the Tribe's lead to 9-5 midway through the second stanza, W&M held the Lancers scoreless during the final 14:53 and closed the game with a 4-0 run to secure the lopsided non-conference road victory.
 
Tribe Standouts
Freshman Belle Martire led the Tribe with seven points (6g, 1a), as her six goals ties for the seventh-best single-game performances in school history.
 
Junior Meredith Hughes also came up big with four goals on five shots, while freshman Lauren Russell added a pair of goals with three draw controls.
 
Freshman Starr Howard continued her outstanding play on the draw circle and posted seven draw controls.
 
Junior goalie Elsa Rall totaled seven saves and recorded a .583 save percentage.
 
Inside the Numbers
W&M outshot LU, 36-12, and owned significant advantages in ground balls (30-22) and draw controls (15-5).
 
Additionally, the Tribe committed seven fewer turnovers (11-18).
 
The Opposition
Kaitlin Luccarelli led Longwood with three goals, while Taylor Blenckstone and Emma Johnson also found the back of the cage once apiece.
 
Goalie Danielle Burke posted a game-high 13 saves and eight ground balls.  
 
Notes
Howard has totaled 32 draw controls through the first six games and needs just nine more to break into W&M's single-season top-10 list … Martire and Hughes accounted for 10 of W&M's 13 goals … Martire has scored at least three goals in three of six games this season and leads the team with 17 goals … W&M improves to 18-2 all-time against Longwood and is now 24-4 versus teams from the Big South Conference … Saturday's game marked the first of five consecutive road contests for the Tribe.
