CONWAY, S.C. – The William & Mary lacrosse team had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 12-11 overtime loss at Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon.
Although W&M (5-4) trailed by as many as six goals in the second half, it utilized a 7-1 run down the stretch to send the contest into an extra frame. Freshman
Grace Ahonen scored the equalizer with just 1:00 remaining, while senior
Maddie Torgerson and freshman
Belle Martire provided three and two goals, respectively, during the pivotal run late in the contest.
Junior goalie
Elsa Rall recorded two of her 11 saves during key moments down the stretch, as she stopped Haley Alexander's shot on goal with just 20 seconds remaining in regulation to help force overtime. Additionally, she came up with a save in the extra session before Coastal Carolina's (5-2) Lyla Robinson scored the game-winner with 1:27 on the clock.
After trailing at halftime, 9-3, W&M outscored the Chanticleers by an 8-2 margin in the second half. Additionally, the Tribe limited CCU to just one goal during the final 26:48 of regulation during its comeback.
Tribe Standouts
Torgerson led the Tribe offensively by equaling a career high with five points (4g, 1a), while Martire (2g, 2a) and classmate
Lauren Russell (3g) also came up big. In addition to matching her career high for goals, Russell also posted a career-best five draw controls.
Freshman
Starr Howard was outstanding on the draw circle and equaled a career high with eight draw controls, which ranks tied for fourth in school history and is just two shy of the program's single-game record. With the impressive effort, she now has 49 draw controls and is just eight away from tying the single-season record set by Ellen Shaffrey (57) in 2015.
In addition to Rall, who totaled 11 saves with a .478 save percentage and six ground balls, senior
Hannah Ryan tallied a team-high three caused turnovers with two ground balls.
Inside the Numbers
W&M outshot CCU, 35-27, which included a 23-11 margin in the second half.
The Tribe owned a 16-10 advantage in draw controls and committed one fewer turnover (16-17), while the Chanticleers owned a narrow 17-15 edge in ground balls.
The Opposition
Haley Alexander (3g, 1a), Haley Kyger (3g) and Samantha Courtemanche (2g, 1a) led CCU offensively, while Kyger added a team-high three draw controls.
Notes
The game marked W&M's first overtime contest of the season … The loss was just the second on the road for the Tribe this season, as it entered the game with a 4-1 mark away from Williamsburg … Additionally, W&M had won its last three road games … The Tribe now owns a 1-1 all-time record against CCU, as it won the teams' only other meeting, 12-8, in 2014 … Ryan's three caused turnovers increased her career total to 50 and moved her into a tie for 10th on W&M's all-time list … Sunday's game marked the fourth of five consecutive road contests for the Tribe.
