NEWARK, Del. – Senior
Bianca Boggs set a school record for points in a season thanks to her team-high 18 points on Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately, Drexel took control behind a hot-shooting first half and a strong start to the second on the way to a 71-60 victory over William & Mary in the Colonial Athletic Association Quarterfinals at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Boggs eclipsed the previous school record held by recent W&M Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Kyra Kaylor with a lay-up late in the third quarter and finished with 530 points on the year. For the game, Boggs was 8-of-14 from the floor and turned in her usual all-around stat line adding six rebounds and three assists.
The Tribe (15-16) led in the early going behind a 7-0 capped by a Boggs 3-pointer midway through the first period. Drexel heated up from distance hitting its final four shots, all 3-pointers, in the opening 10 minutes to take an 18-14 lead.
In the second quarter, the Dragons (23-7) seized control thanks to a 12-0 run. W&M drew within a point on an
Eva Hodgson 3-pointer at the 8:33 mark, but Drexel hit five-straight shots to open up a 14-point cushion. The Dragons connected on 75 percent from the field in the second quarter and hit 6-of-8 from long range in the opening half to lead 43-30 at the break.
Out of the locker room, the Dragons scored the opening seven points to take a commanding 20-point lead just over three minutes in the third quarter. W&M battled back to within 59-46 thanks to five-straight Boggs' points, including a 3-point play, just three minutes into the fourth quarter. Despite the fight, the Tribe could get no closer than the final margin of 11.
