BOSTON, Mass. – The William & Mary men's basketball team turned in a strong defensive second-half performance and whittled an 18-point deficit to as little as six with three minutes remaining. In the end, Northeastern converted 20 Tribe turnovers into 30 points and held the advantage beyond the 3-point arc (9-of-18) and at the free throw line (17-of-20) on the way to a 72-60 victory inside Matthews Arena on Thursday night.
The Tribe (9-15, 5-7 CAA) trailed by 15 midway through the first half, before using a 13-2 run capped by a
Nathan Knight 3-point play to close to margin to 28-24 with 3:56 remaining in the frame. The Huskies (14-9, 8-3 CAA) scored the period's final 13 points to take a 17-point cushion into the locker room. NU connected on 7-of-11 from 3-point range in taking the first-half lead.
W&M rallied by shooting 57.7 percent in the second half and closed to within six, 63-57, on a
Justin Pierce free throw with 3:21 left. Like it had for the majority of the contest, turnovers did in the Tribe. The Green and Gold turned it over four times in the final three minutes, and Northeastern hit 7-of-8 from the free throw line to put the game away. Defensively, W&M limited the Huskies to 31.8 percent (7-of-22) from the field and just 2-of-7 from 3-point range (28.6) in the final minutes, but couldn't overcome the early deficit.
Knight tallied his ninth double-double of the year with 18 points and 14 rebounds to go along with a career-high tying six assists. Freshman
Chase Audige added 14 points, while Pierce just missed a double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds. Vasa Pusica led five Huskies in double figures with 19 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
