W&M Football Reclaims Capital Cup with Thrilling OT Victory at Richmond

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary football team reclaimed the Capital Cup with a thrilling 21-15 overtime victory at Richmond in its season finale on Saturday afternoon.
 
Freshman quarterback Hollis Mathis provided the game-winning touchdown pass when he connected with junior wideout Zach Burdick on a 23-yard strike. W&M's (5-7, 3-5) score came after senior defensive tackle Bill Murray blocked a 32-yard field goal attempt by UR's (5-7, 4-4) Jake Larson during the Spiders' overtime possession.
 
W&M tied the game at 15 midway through the fourth quarter when senior defensive lineman Darius Fullwood scored on a 3-yard fumble return that was caused when redshirt freshman linebacker Isaiah Jones knocked the ball loose on a sack.
 
Jones was selected as the Capital Cup Most Valuable Player after totaling a team-high nine tackles with 2.0 sacks, 4.0 TFL, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a PBU.
 
Tribe Standouts
In addition to the big blocked field goal in overtime, Murray closed out his remarkable collegiate career with six tackles, 3.0 TFL, a sack and a forced fumble.
 
Senior defensive backs Corey Parker and Isaiah Laster also came up big with interceptions.
 
Freshman wide receiver Kane Everson posted a team-best seven catches for 70 yards, while Bronson Yoder found the end zone with a 13-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
 

 
Inside the Numbers
In addition to limiting Richmond to just 31 rushing yards (on 31 carries), W&M forced five turnovers.
 
Additionally, the Tribe's defense limited Richmond to just 5 of 15 on third downs and stopped the Spiders on their only fourth down conversion attempt.
 
The Tribe registered 5.0 sacks and 10.0 TFL
                   
The Opposition
Quarterback Joe Mancuso completed 27 of 46 passes for 270 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.
 
Savon Smith led UR with 10 receptions for 99 yards, while Charlie Fessler posted eight catches for 84 yards with a touchdown.  
 
Notes
Led by first-year Head Coach Mike London, W&M finishes the season with three wins in its final four games … The Tribe now controls the all-time series against Richmond, 63-62-5 … Murray's block was the 10th of his career … Laster's interception was the ninth of his career … The Tribe's 26 rushing touchdowns this season are just one shy of tying for the 10th-best total in the program's 126-year history … W&M improves to 2-0 in overtime games this season and 9-4 all-time … With Fullwood's touchdown in the fourth quarter, W&M scored three defensive touchdowns this season.
