WILLIAMSBURG, Va.- William & Mary defeated Delaware 3-0 in a CAA clash Monday evening at Kaplan Arena. The Tribe was powered by a pair of outstanding performances from
Kate Dedrick and
Lauren Merrill on the way to the clean sweep. Dedrick ripped 19 kills in the three sets hitting .333 while Merrill added a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs. With the win, the Tribe improved to 2-5 in conference play.
How It Happened
Dedrick picked up right where she left off on Saturday dominated the opening frame with seven kills and five digs.
Gabi Ganley began what would be an impressive performance with seven digs in the first act. The teams played level before a kill by
Julia Brown jumpstarted a 4-0 run to give the Tribe an 8-4 lead. The lead would hold until the Blue Hens used a 4-0 spurt of their own to grab a 20-19 edge. The Tribe tied the set at 22-22 before a pair of
Lauren Merrill kills and a sneaky attack from
Autumn Brenner gave the home team a 25-23 win.
The second set was all William & Mary as
Anna Porter held service for the first eight points of the contest. Delaware would battle back to cut the lead to four, but the Tribe would hold on thanks to eight more kills from Dedrick, six kills and eight digs from Merrill, and a .429 team hitting percentage. Porter, Dedrick, and Brown all had aces in the frame as the Tribe would coast to a 25-18 second set.
The final act was much closer as the Blue Hens jumped out to an early 3-1 lead. They would hold the advantage before a kill from
Claire Farrell gave the Tribe an 18-17 score. William & Mary would never trail again in the match as
Kate Dedrick appropriately sent home the final kill of the night to give the Green and Gold a 25-23 win and a 3-0 sweep. Farrell had three kills in the last set of play while Merrill added five.
Inside the Numbers
With
Kate Dedrick's 19-kill performance she now has 40 kills in the past six sets, a 6.67 kills per set average. The junior now owns the top two offensive performances in the CAA by an attacker in a three-set match after Saturday's 21-kill showing. The double-double was the fifth on the season for Merrill and her third in five matches. For the 10th time this season,
Julia Brown reached at least five blocks in a match.
Autumn Brenner led the Tribe offense with 35 assists. It was the fifth time this season the senior dished out 30 dimes and the third time in conference play.
Gabi Ganley led the Tribe with 16 digs. The Virginia native is averaging 4.33 digs per set in her last four matches.
Notes
The Tribe improved to 6-0 on the season when winning the first set. The Green and Gold have won each of the past two meetings against Delaware at Kaplan Arena.
Lauren Merrill has been a key player for William & Mary and the team is 4-1 when the sophomore delivers a double-double.
