The William & Mary field hockey team dominated the shot count on Tuesday night against Longwood, but came out on the short end of a 1-0 heartbreaker at Busch Field. the Tribe moves to 3-5 on the year, while the Lancers improve to 5-4 overall.
How it Happened
- W&M dominated possession and pace of play throughout the game, but couldn't break through the Longwood defense that packed in around the goal and a strong night from the Lancers goalkeeper backing them up.
- The Tribe took eight shots in the first quarter, six of them on-goal, and also had a penalty corner in the first 15 minutes, but the tip on the corner from senior
Cassidy Goodwin (Gloucester, Va.) went just wide of the goalpost.
- In the second period, Longwood pressed hard on counter opportunities, and scored in the 23rd minute. Tribe sophomore goalkeeper
Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) made a spectacular diving save on the first shot attempt, but was unable to get back to her feet in the scrum and the rebound bounced out to a Lancers attacker on the far side of the goal for a shot and score.
- Coming out of the halftime break, the Tribe was back on the attack, dominating the shot count 12-1 in the final 30 minutes and taking three penalty corners in the second half.
- Despite those three good looks on corners, and a number of other attempts in the normal run of play, W&M wasn't able to get the equalizer before the final horn sounded.
