Women's Basketball Tripped Up at Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass. – The William & Mary women's basketball team dropped an 88-74 decision at Northeastern on Sunday afternoon in Boston. With the result, the Tribe drops to 8-5, 1-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Huskies improve to 12-1, 2-0 in league action.
 
With the scored tied at 7-7, W&M raced out to a quick 6-0 run to take its largest lead of the first half. Freshman Eva Hodgson sandwiched four points around a senior Bianca Boggs lay-up to give W&M a 13-7 lead with 5:45 left in the opening quarter.
 
Leading by four, Northeastern used a quick 5-0 spurt to take its largest lead of the first half late in the second quarter. Jess Genco canned a corner 3-pointer before Rachel Aho added a lay-up to make 37-28 with 1:55 left in the first half. The Tribe, however, responded by scoring five of the last six points to cut the halftime deficit to 38-33.
 
Northeastern used a 10-1 run to build a 14-point lead it would not relinquish with 2:42 left in the third quarter. Gabby Giacone hit back-to-back baskets, before Shannon Todd hit a triple to push the lead to double-figures for the first time. After a Tribe free throw, Genco added three from the stripe to make it 61-47.

Individual Leaders
Senior Bianca Boggs led the Tribe with 21 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals for her third straight 20-point game. Freshman Eva Hodgson and redshirt sophomore Harper Birdsong each finished with 16 points. Hodgson added four rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Birdsong chipped in five rebounds, two helpers, and a theft. Junior Victoria Reynolds added nine points, while senior Misha Jones had six.
 
Jess Genco led all scorers with 30 points, five rebounds, and seven assists. Shannon Todd added 17 points, four rebounds, and three assists, while Gabby Giacone rounded out the double-digit scorers with a double-double on 13 points and 12 rebounds.
 
Inside the Numbers
- W&M shot 37.7-percent (23-of-61) from the field in the contest, but did connect on 11 3-pointers, which is the third time this season it has hit more than 10.
 
- Northeastern held a considerable edge on the glass, 41-29. It led to 11-second chance points, however W&M led that category 12-11.
 
- The Tribe's bench outscored the Huskies' 29-12.
 
Notes
Senior Bianca Boggs recorded her third straight 20 point game with 21 points, and becomes 14th player in school history to have a streak of three, or more, games with 20, or more, points … It was the 11th time this season she was in double-figures and has accomplished that feat 53 times in her career … It was her fifth 20-point game this season, and the 12th of her career … Her 21 points give her 1,145 and puts her two points away from moving into 14th all-time on W&M's scoring list… Freshman Eva Hodgson recorded another double-digit performance with 16 points in the game … It was the sixth time this year she was in double-figures … Sophomore Harper Birdsong was in double-digits for the ninth game this season.
 
What's Ahead
W&M opens a season-long three-game home stand on Friday, Jan. 11 when it welcomes UNCW to Kaplan Arena. Tip time between the Tribe and the Seahawks is set for 7 p.m.
