Men's Basketball Falls to Northeastern

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Less than 48 hours after a heartbreaking triple-overtime loss, the difficulties of youth and a challenging Colonial Athletic Association slate reared its ugly head on Saturday afternoon inside Kaplan Arena. The preseason league favorite Northeastern shot a sizzling 65.5 percent in the second half, including 53.8 percent from 3, to dispatch of the William & Mary men's basketball, 90-70.

The Tribe (7-11, 3-3 CAA) led early thanks to a 9-0 run just over five minutes into the contest. Junior Matt Milon scored five during the spurt before freshman L.J. Owens' floater gave W&M a 12-9 lead. W&M led 22-20 with just 6:28 remaining in the opening half, but the Huskies finished the period strong. A 10-2 Northeastern run late in the frame gave the visitors a six-point advantage at the break, 40-34.

Northeastern's Shawn Occeus, who missed the opening nine games of the year due to injury, ignited the Huskies in the second half. He scored 16 of his season-high 21 points in the final 20 minutes, hitting 5-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-5 from 3. He came up big during a 17-3 run midway through the second half to put the game away. He scored 10 points during the run, including the final seven to push NU's lead to 78-51 with 5:11 remaining.

Junior Nathan Knight led the Tribe once again with 22 points on 7-of-9 from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 from 3 and 6-of-6 at the free throw line. He added team-highs with eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Classmate Justin Pierce tallied 14 points and seven rebounds, while Owens scored a career-high 15 points off the bench on 6-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-4 from 3.
