WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary volleyball team opened its home schedule with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-21) sweep of Savannah State in the Colonial Classic on Friday evening. The Tribe (3-4) hit a season-high .320 and served 10 aces to cruise past the Tigers (0-6) for its third straight win.
The Green and Gold raced out to an 11-4 lead in the opening set, forcing a SSU timeout. However, the break didn't slow down the Tribe as sophomore
Julia Brown highlighted an 8-3 run with back-to-back kills and an ace. Senior
Katie Primatic and freshman
Claire Farrell both hammered kills, before combining on a block to reach set-point, 24-10. Rookie
Macy Cummings followed up the block with a deep-shot kill to end game one.
In the second set, back-to-back spikes by sophomore
Kate Dedrick lifted the Tribe to a 10-4 lead. Senior
Heather Pippus crushed a kill to push the margin to double-digits, 21-11, before eventually capping the period with an ace.
W&M owned a 20-11 advantage in the third set after senior
Katie Kemp found Farrell for a kill. A combination block from Dedrick and rookie
Madeleine Bertz followed by back-to-back aces from junior
Autumn Brenner led to match-point, 24-13. However, SSU scored eight consecutive points, before freshman
Anne Louise Seekford could crush the match-winning kill.
Inside the Numbers
- The Tribe generated a .320-plus attack percentage in the first two sets.
- 41 of W&M's 58 points were via kills.
- A duo of Pippus and Dedrick led all player with eight kills.
