The William & Mary field hockey team started conference play 2-0 for the second year in a row on Sunday, blanking Hofstra 1-0 on the road. The Tribe improves to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association to take the early lead in the league, while the Pride falls to 3-10 (1-1 CAA).
How it Happened
- W&M came out firing and never let up, eager to avoid a repeat of Friday when it needed a furious comeback effort to beat Northeastern. Freshman
Jorja Morgan (Wakerley, QLD, Australia) opened the barrage with her first shot just 1:18 in.
- The Tribe broke through five minutes in exactly, on its fifth shot of the game. Redshirt-senior
Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW, Australia) passed the ball in to junior
Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.), who beat Hofstra goalkeeper Betty Bosma for her third goal of the season.
- That goal would prove to be all the offense needed in the game, but not for lack of trying by the W&M offense who took a season-high 23 shots, out-shooting Hofstra 13-1 in the first half and 10-2 in the second. Bosma made eight saves for the opponents.
- Hughes and freshman
Cara Menges (Richmond, Va.) led the way with five shots each, while Hooper and Morgan both finished with four.
- Penalty corners were in favor of the Tribe, 4-2, for just the third time this season.
- Freshman goalkeeper
Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) was only called on to make one save in earning her third win and first shutout of the season.
