W&M Field Hockey Loses Tough Road Match at Wake Forest

The William & Mary field hockey team was unable to overcome a quick start by ACC-foe Wake Forest today on the road, falling 4-1.  The Tribe moves to 3-3 on the year, while the Demon Deacons improved to 3-4 overall.

How it Happened
- Wake Forest struck early, taking advantage of two penalty corners in the first four minutes to jump ahead 2-0.
- For the rest of the first half, however, W&M played tough, smart defense, holding Wake scoreless over the final 30 minutes in the face of seven shots.  Freshman goalkeeper Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) made a pair of saves, and the defense blocked three more shots in front.
- In the second half, Wake Forest added two more goals despite a third save from Jones, before the Tribe was able to answer in the 50th minute.  Out of a penalty corner, junior Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.) took a shot from the top that classmate Cata Days (Buenos Aires, Argentina) tipped by the goalkeeper to make the score 4-1.  W&M earned another corner shortly thereafter, but that was how the score remained until the final horn.

Starters
W&M - Morgan Connor, Jenny McCann, Annie Snead, Ashleigh Nottingham, Christie van de Kamp, Estelle Hughes, Cara Menges, Woodard Hooper, Cassidy Goodwin, Jorja Morgan, Haley Hopkins
WFU - Isla Bint, Abby Carpenter, Laia Vancells, Emily Adamson, Alexis Grippo, Sam Buzalewski, Brittany Dickinson, Anne van Hoof, Veerle Bos, Megan Anderson, Jule Grashoff

Notes
Cata Days scored her first goal of the season ... Captain Jenny McCann (Annandale, Va.) earned her first start of the year ... This was the sixth game in a row to start the year where the winning team has scored exactly four goals ... That is now a program-record streak of games in which the winning team has scored four or more goals, and the longest-ever streak of games in which the winning total has been the exact same number of goals in each game.

Next Up
William & Mary returns home this weekend to host No. 2 UConn, Sunday, Sept. 23, at 12 p.m. at Busch Field.  The Huskies are the defending NCAA Champions, and undefeated so far on the season.
