BLACKSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary volleyball team opened the
Hokie Invitational with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-6, 25-20) setback against hosting ACC member Virginia Tech on Friday afternoon. VT (4-0) finished the match hitting .382 and totaled 13 aces to defeat the Tribe (0-4).
The Hokies got off to a strong start in the opening set with a .308 hitting rate, collecting 13 kills in 26 attempts with only five errors. After the Tribe rallied for an 8-7 advantage, VT took control of the frame behind an 8-0 run.
The Green and Gold struggled to handle the serve of VT in game two, conceding eight aces. Virginia Tech rode the serve of Ester Talamazzi for 12 consecutive points in claiming the period.
The third set was closely contested as the score was deadlocked, 14-all, at the mid-point. However, W&M struggled to break Talamazzi serve again as the Hokies scored five unanswered points for a 22-15 advantage and wouldn't relinquish it.
