DAVIDSON, N.C. – In the second match of the Wildcat Classic, junior
Autumn Brenner registered a double-double as the William & Mary volleyball team found itself on the wrong side of a 3-2 final (25-22, 23-25, 25-17, 23-25, 15-9) against defending Southland Conference Champion Central Arkansas on Saturday afternoon.
Brenner dished out a match-high 49 assists to go along with 13 digs and the Tribe (0-2) went five sets for the second consecutive contest in a hard-fought effort versus the Bears (2-0).
Rookie
Claire Farrell continued an impressive start to her collegiate career after recording double-digits kills for the second straight match behind a season-high 17. Sophomore
Kate Dedrick also topped her previous outing with 16 kills. Classmate
Julia Brown produced 12.5 points by smashing eight kills across 17 attempts and totaling six blocks. Freshman
Madeleine Bertz also made plays on eight kills and three assisted blocks.
The contest was an evenly matched affair in the first two sets to start with a 1-all tie. In game one, both teams had little trouble generating offense, but six service errors ended up costing the Tribe in that period.
Trailing by a point late in game two, Brown got involved in two blocks and freshman
Anne Louise Seekford served back-to-back aces to put W&M ahead 22-20. A Bears' attack error and the swing of Farrell sealed the second set.
However, the Bears heated back up in the third set, hammering 13 kills in 28 attempts with just four errors to take a 2-1 match lead. The Tribe grinded out another 25-23 final in game four, which was highlighted by six kills in 14 swings from Farrell.
Nonetheless, UCA closed out the match with its best effort in the final frame. The Bears generated a match-high .526 attack rate by earning 15 of its 12 points on kills in 19 attempts with only two errors.
