Women's Tennis Sweeps CAA Doublehader with 6-1 win over Towson

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The No. 47-ranked William & Mary women's tennis team completed a sweep of Saturday's Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, topping Towson, 6-1, in the nightcap. After upending James Madison, 5-2, in the morning, the Tribe (13-8, 2-0 CAA) claimed the doubles point and notched four of its five singes wins in straight sets, to dispatch of the Tigers (10-8, 1-3 CAA). The Green and Gold ran its win streak to three during the week, including its 4-3 upset of No. 19 Wake Forest on Monday.
 
W&M took the doubles point with wins at the top-two positions. After a Towson victory at No. 3, the Tribe's top tandem of junior Clara Tanielian and freshman Vitoria Okuyama downed Renate van Oorschodt and Lucy Williams, 6-2, to pull the Green and Gold even. Senior Cecily Wuenshcer and sophomore Charlotte Madson clinched the initial point of the match with a 6-3 win over A.J. Gomer and Yevgeniya Shusterman at No. 2.
 
Seniors Ekaterina Stepanova and Olivia Thaler extended the Tribe advantage to 3-0 with wins at No. 4 and No. 5. Thaler won her third-straight match, second on the day and team-best 23rd on the year, dropping just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over van Oorschodt at No. 5. Stepanova claimed her second match of the day as well, downing Shusterman, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 4 position.
 
For the second time this week and fourth time this season, sophomore Natalia Perry clinched the Tribe victory. She also iced the Tribe's 4-3 win over No. 19 Wake Forest with a victory at No. 3 singles on Monday. On Saturday, Perry topped Lucy Williams, 6-2, 6-4, for the capper and her 21st win of the year.
 
Junior Lauren Goodman and Tanielian rounded out the Tribe triumph with singles victories. Goodman bested Gomer, 6-3, 6-3, on the third line, while Tanielian dispatched of two-time All-CAA honoree Nicole Shakhnazarova in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 10-5, for her 22nd singles victory.
 
Notes
The Tribe improved to 4-0 all-time against the Tigers in the teams first meeting during the regular season and second in Williamsburg … Junior Clara Tanielian and freshman Vitoria Okuyama improved to 8-6 as a team with its second win at No. 1 doubles …  Senior Cecily Wuenscher and sophomore Charlotte Madson teamed together for the first time this season on Saturday … Madon picked up her sixth doubles wins and improved to 3-2 in dual-match play, while Wuenscher won her seventh double tilt and evened her dual-match ledger at 4-4 … Senior Olivia Thaler won her third-straight-match and improved her team-best singles record to 23-11 … She is 13-8 in duals and notched her third win at No. 5 … Senior Ekaterina Stepanova won her third match in a row in picking up her 60th career collegiate singles win between her time with the Tribe and at Wisconsin … She won her ninth dual-match singles tilt of the year and evened her ledger at 2-2 on the four line … Sophomore Natalia Perry upped her mark to 21-14 overall, including 11-8 in duals and 5-3 at No. 2 … Junior Lauren Goodman won her second match in a row, improving to 18-14 overall and 12-9 in dual-match competition … Tanielian evened her dual-match record at 10-10 with her first win at the top spot … She ran her overall ledger to 22-12.
 
Up Next
The Tribe closes out the regular season against a pair of instate rivals in No. 43 Old Dominion and VCU next week. The Green and Gold travels to Norfolk to face the Monarchs on Friday, April 13, at 4 p.m., before hosting the Rams on Sunday, April 15, at 1 p.m. W&M will honor its four-member senior class of Maria Groener, Ekaterina Stepanova, Olivia Thaler and Cecily Wuenscher during the match with VCU.
