NEWARK, Del. (April 22, 2018)—The William & Mary lacrosse team suffered a 14-6 setback at Delaware on Sunday afternoon.
Although W&M (4-12, 0-5) held UD (7-9, 2-3) scoreless for the final 21:11, it was unable to overcome an 11-goal deficit.
The Blue Hens opened the game with seven unanswered goals before W&M got on the scoreboard when
Abby Corkum found the back of the cage midway through the first half.
However, UD scored three of the final four goals in the opening stanza before utilizing a 4-0 run early in the second half to build a commanding lead.
The Tribe scored the game's final three goals but was unable to get any closer than the final margin.
Tribe Standouts
Corkum led the Tribe with three points (2g, 1a), while
Meredith Hughes,
Danielle Palmucci,
McKinley Wade and
Alexandria Specht also recorded one goal apiece.
Hughes added a team-high four draw controls, while
Hannah Ryan posted five caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Goalie
Claire Duchene came off the bench for the second half and allowed just four goals with five saves during the final 30 minutes of action.
Inside the Numbers
Although W&M outshot UD in the second half, 17-13, the Blue Hens finished the game with five more shots (33-28).
Additionally, the Blue Hens owned advantages in draw controls (14-8) and ground balls (21-17).
W&M committed five fewer turnovers than UD (16-21).
Five different Tribe players combined to score its six goals.
All four of UD's goals in the second half came during a span of just 4:06.
The Opposition
Sydney Rausa led the Blue Hens with six points (5g, 1a), while Megan Santoleri posted four points (3g, 1a).
Becky Gohsler (7 DC) and Caroline Farley (5 DC) combined for 12 of the Blue Hens 14 draw controls.
