Charlie Fletcher Breaks Appearance Record, Baseball Falls to JMU in 10 Innings

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team dropped another close game at James Madison, 4-3, in 10 innings, but senior Charlie Fletcher set a new all-time appearance standard on Sunday afternoon. The Tribe (14-23, 3-9) gave Fletcher the ball for the 97th time in his career to break the 10-year-old record versus the Dukes (19-16, 5-7).

For the first time this weekend, both team were unable to manufacture a run in the first three innings. JMU and W&M exchanged a hit and went down in order twice as the contest looked to be shaping into a pitching duel.

However, the narrative switched in the fourth inning as the Dukes answered first. Adam Sisk hit a solo shot to left field and Ryan Coale hit a RBI single up the middle, before the Tribe turned a 6-4-3 double to play to end the frame.

A two-out bomb from senior Ryan Hall pulled the Tribe even at 2-all in the top of the fifth. Senior Craig McLane and junior Owen Socher got things going with back-to-back singles, but McLane was tagged at home following an attempt to score on a fly out to right field. Nonetheless, Hall salvaged the rally with a two-RBI blast to left field.

The seventh inning saw JMU and W&M trade runs in creating a 3-all deadlock. McLane scored for the Tribe after singling to shortstop, making it to third on a balk and sac bunt, before coming home behind a passed ball. The Dukes then answered with a pair of doubles to keep it even.

Both offenses were kept off the scoreboard in the next two frames. Fletcher made his historic appearance in the bottom of the ninth. He gave up a one-out single, but retired the next two batters via strikeout and fly out to force extras. The Dukes would go on to walk off on a RBI single to the left line.

Tribe Standouts
Hall and McLane notched two hits apiece and scored a run. Both of Hall's hits were extra base knocks as he doubled to lead off the first inning. Junior Hunter Smith reached twice on a base hit and walk.

On the mound, sophomore Wade Strain earned the start and went five innings with three strikeouts, six hits and two runs (both earned). Rookie Justin Pearson and senior Michael Toner also threw a scoreless inning with a K each.

Inside the Numbers
- Both teams didn't have trouble finding the strike zone with just three combined walks in the game.
- Extra base hits continued to plague the Tribe after allowing five.
- Two of W&M's runs were two-out RBI. However, there were just three two-outs among each team.
- The Dukes were able to capitalize enough with runner in scoring position after finishing 4-for-13 (.308).
- Daniel Goggin (4-2) collected the win as he tossed the last three innings with five strikeouts and two outs.
- Fletcher was charged with the loss after twirling 1.1 innings with a strikeout, three hits and a run.

Notes
Fletcher replaced Pete Vernon '08 as Tribe Baseball's new appearance leader and ties fourth in Colonial Athletic Association record books…Strain earned his first-ever weekend start after starring the bullpen…The 10 am first pitch was earliest game time for the Tribe in avoidance of inclement weather…W&M continues to find itself in nail-biting affairs with 19 one-run decisions and seven ending in extras….Hall homered for the 15th time in his career and now ties sixth all-time at W&M in doubles (54)…McLane generated his second multi-hit game.
